2027 Grech RV Strada Ion vs Terreno Ion: A Practical Comparison

The 2027 Grech RV Strada ION and Terreno ION are often the two models buyers compare before making a final decision. On the surface, they look similar: both are Class B motorhomes built on the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter 3500XD, both carry the same GRECH POWER MAX power system, and both sit at a comparable price point. The differences are real, but they are specific, and whether they matter depends entirely on how you travel. This post breaks down both models factually so you can make that call for yourself.

What Both Models Share

Understanding what is identical across both vehicles helps narrow the decision to what actually differs.

Power system

Both the Strada Ion and Terreno Ion use the GRECH POWER MAX system, which Grech developed in partnership with Victron Energy for the 2027 model year. The system includes a 51V lithium-ion battery at 20,480 watt-hours, a 3,000W Victron inverter, 250 watts of rooftop solar, and the ARCO Zeus Bluetooth-capable alternator. This is a 21 percent increase in battery capacity over the previous generation, translating to up to 16 hours of continuous air conditioning without shore power or a generator. As with any battery-based system, real-world runtime will vary depending on temperature, usage habits, and how many other systems are drawing power at the same time.

Chassis and drivetrain

Both vehicles run on the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter 3500XD with a 4-cylinder diesel engine producing 211 horsepower and 332 lb-ft of torque, paired with a 9-speed transmission. AWD is standard on both.

Climate control

Both models use the Timberline system, which draws diesel from the Sprinter’s fuel tank for cabin heat and hot water rather than using electricity as the primary heat source. They also include air conditioning, with the GRECH POWER MAX system providing up to 16 hours of A/C runtime on battery under stated conditions.

Connectivity.

Both models include integrated Starlink Roam equipment, although owners must purchase and maintain the service plan separately. Garmin SERV provides connected control and monitoring of house systems, while GRECH CONNECT supports remote diagnostics and technical assistance.

Floor plans

For 2027, both the Strada Ion and Terreno Ion are available in two floor plans: the Tour and the Lounge. The Tour seats up to 5 and sleeps up to 2. The Lounge seats up to 7 and sleeps up to 2. The Lounge floor plan is a new addition to the Terreno ION for 2027, giving buyers of the shorter model the same seating flexibility previously only available in the Strada.

Where the Two Models Differ

The primary dimensional difference is 16 inches of overall length. Both models use a 170-inch-wheelbase Sprinter chassis, but the Strada uses the extended body while the Terreno uses the non-extended version. The interior dimensions are the same size in both models, while the Strada’s longer body creates additional cargo space behind the sofa bed.

Storage space

The additional length in the Strada does not create more interior living space. Instead, it provides extra rear storage behind the sofa bed. That makes the Strada the stronger fit for buyers who want additional room for gear without using more of the shared interior living area. The Terreno keeps the same interior dimensions without that additional trunk-like storage space.

Maneuverability

Both models use the same 170-inch wheelbase, so their basic turning geometry is similar. The Terreno’s advantage comes from its shorter body and reduced rear overhang. That can make it easier to fit into shorter campsites, back into confined parking spaces, and manage rear swing near posts, curbs, and fuel islands. The Strada requires slightly more attention behind the rear axle, particularly on steep driveway transitions and uneven campground entrances.

Which Model Suits Which Traveler

The Strada Ion is likely the better fit if:

  • You want the additional trunk-like storage space behind the sofa bed.
  • You regularly carry gear and want more dedicated storage without reducing interior living space.
  • You do not mind the additional 16 inches of overall vehicle length.
  • You value additional exterior storage while keeping the same interior dimensions as the Terreno.

The Terreno Ion is likely the better fit if:

  • The 16-inch reduction in overall length matters for where you park or camp.
  • You plan to visit national parks, campgrounds, or parking areas where vehicle length can affect your options.
  • You want the same interior dimensions as the Strada but do not need the additional trunk-like storage space.
  • You prefer the shorter overall body for parking and campsite flexibility.
